Okuma machines are fully supported by OnTakt using MTConnect. The free MTConnect Agent & Adapter app from Okuma may need to be installed if it is not already included on the control.
For full functionality, OnTakt requires Okuma MTConnect Adapter version 2.5.0.0 or later, which requires THINC API version 1.18 or later.
To connect to an Okuma OSP machine via MTConnect, the URL should look like: http://10.0.0.8:5000
Screenshots on this page are from an OSP-200 control. The interface may look slightly different on newer controls, but the instructions should be the same.
Machine setup
- Locate the MTConnect icon in the system tray on the control and double-tap it to open the MTConnect configuration interface. You may need to hold Ctrl and press the button to show the taskbar. If it is not listed, you may need to tap the « button.
- The Okuma MTConnect Adapter configuration window opens:
- Make sure you are in the "Configurations" tab and then tap "Tags Configuration" or press the "TAGS CONFIG." softkey.
- The window switches to the tag configuration view:
- Ensure the range set by "Common Variable Starting/Ending Index" contains all of the common variables your programs use (or at least the ones you want to read with OnTakt).
- For newer MTConnect adapter versions, there may be checkbox at the top labelled "Enable Monitoring Tags". This should be enabled.
- In the "Monitoring Tags" table, ensure that at least the following tags are checked. If you have just installed the MTConnect adapter, it is safe to press the "UNCHECK ALL" softkey and then check these tags, as there will not be any applications using other tags.

- Press the "SAVE & CLOSE" softkey to return to the configuration list.
- Press the "MINIMIZE TO SYSTEM TRAY" softkey to close the MTConnect configuration window.
Troubleshooting
If any part of the MTConnect stack on the machine control fails, OnTakt will report a "Communication problems" alert.
Step 1: Check the Firewall
If you still can't access the NC URL in a browser, there may be a firewall issue blocking access to the MTConnect Agent on the machine.
Try to visit http://localhost:5000
from a browser on the machine control.
- If the page loads, there is a firewall or networking issue. You may need to add a rule allowing inbound traffic on port 5000 to Windows Services.
- If the page does not load, the agent is not running correctly. Consult the Okuma MTConnect software user manual for more information.
Step 2: Check the MTConnect Agent
Screenshots and labels in this section are from a P300-L control.
Visit the machine's NC URL directly in your browser. If the page loads and displays information, the MTConnect Agent is running.
If the page fails to load, restart the MTConnect Agent on the control:
- Open the Windows run dialog by pressing Ctrl + + R.
- Run
services.msc
. - Scroll down to "MTConnect Agent", right-click it, and click Restart.
Step 3: Check the MTConnect Adapter
Screenshots and labels in this section are from a P200-L control.
If the page loaded but all data items are "UNAVAILABLE", the MTConnect Agent is running but the MTConnect adapter is not reporting.
Sometimes the Okuma MTConnect adapter will stop sending data to the Okuma MTConnect agent, which will cause all values to report as "UNAVAILABLE".
To fix this, restart the MTConnect adapter by following these steps:
- Locate the MTConnect icon in the system tray on the control and double-tap it to open the MTConnect configuration interface. You may need to hold Ctrl and press the button to show the taskbar. If it is not listed, you may need to tap the « button.
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + .
- In the "Applications" tab, select "Okuma MTConnect Adapter" and then click "End Task". If a login screen appears, it is okay to close it.
- Open the Windows Start menu by pressing Ctrl + .
- Navigate to Programs > Okuma > MTConnect Adapter and launch MTConnect Adapter.
Step 4: Restart the control
There are several other components that can cause communication problems between the MTConnect Adapter and MTConnect Agent applications. The easiest way to stop them all and ensure they all restart in the correct sequence is to restart the control normally. If communication problems persist after a restart, contact Wolfram Manufacturing Technologies for further troubleshooting assistance.
